What were the highlights of your experience putting it together? Were there any challenges? But a catalogue raisonné is not a biography, and the personal matters are outside its remit (although I did sneak a few items in, and included a chronology – which deals with facts, rather than the speculative nonsense that often passes for biography). ![]() MH: Countless things, and I wouldn’t know where to start with what I have learned about his art. Is there anything new you learnt about Francis Bacon along the way - about his art, his life, or about him as a person? I believe that perceptions will be shifted when his entire oeuvre is available to review. MH: The received view of Bacon is predicated on only about a third of the (584) paintings that he didn’t destroy. How do you think it will change or enhance our perception and understanding of Francis Bacon? Martin Harrison: It’s a huge relief – I’m exhausted by it – and actually it’s surprisingly useful – I’ve referred to it many times already. How does it feel to have completed the catalogue raisonné? ![]()
